Prince Harry, William’s funeral appearance was not PR, says former Butler
  • Prince Harry and Prince William walked hand in hand at the Queen’s funeral on Monday.
  • The decision was no PR stunt, according to King Charles Grant Harold’s former butler.
  • Harold said the brothers showed they were a “united family” before the funeral.

Grant Harold, a former butler to King Charles, spoke to Insider about Prince Harry’s relationship with the royal family after the Queen’s funeral.

Harry and William walked hand in hand at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral on Monday. It was a contrasting picture of Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021, where their cousin Peter Phillips stood between the two brothers.

It is unclear if the brothers have reconciled after reports of a rift dating back to 2018. The Guardian reported that William and Harry did not make eye contact and kept away from each other during the funeral.

Harold served in the Royal Family from 2004 until 2011 and worked closely with Charles, Harry and William. He said he didn’t think Harry and William’s joint appearance would have been a PR stunt, but rather a decision that came naturally.

“Things don’t just happen,” Harold said. “It’s always planned. But I don’t think this was planned on purpose.”

Harold said the brothers had already shown themselves to be a “united family” when they toured Windsor Castle with their wives to watch the Queen’s salute two days after her death.

“It may be short-lived,” said Harold, “but the death of the Queen brought them together.”

William invited Meghan Markle and Harry to join them on the tour, a Kensington Palace spokesperson previously told The Times of London.

“The Prince of Wales thought it was an important show of loneliness at a very difficult time for the family,” the spokesperson said, according to The Times.

Harold added that Harry’s relationship with the King could improve as well. The King mentioned his “love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives abroad” in his first address as king on September 9.

“The fact that Charles said that, he was stretching out an olive branch,” said Harold.

“He acknowledged their new life in California, but made it clear that they were part of the family. It was his first major statement as King, and he made it clear that even if people don’t like Meghan, she is part of the family,” he added.

Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and representatives of the Duke of Sussex did not immediately respond to an Insider’s request for comment.
