Nvidia’s DLSS 3 May Reduce The RTX 4090 .’s Insane Power Requirements

Nvidia’s upcoming flagship, the RTX 4090, has been tested at Cyberpunk 2077 movie. He did a great job, but the results were much better with DLSS 3 enabled.

The card managed to surprise us in two ways. Firstly, the maximum clock was higher than expected, and secondly, DLSS 3 had already managed to reduce the card’s power draw by a significant amount.

The card was tested at 1440p in a system with an Intel Core i9-12900K CPU, running at the highest possible settings that Cyberpunk 2077 movie You should offer, this means Ultra Ray Tracing is enabled and Psycho (Maximum) settings. First, let’s take a look at how a GPU can perform without DLSS 3 enabled.

At the original resolution, the game ran at an average of 59 frames per second (fps) with a latency of 72 to 75 milliseconds (milliseconds). The RTX 4090 was able to hit a whopping 2.8GHz, and that’s without overclocking – these are stock speeds, although the maximum clock speed announced for the RTX 4090 is just over 2.5GHz. This means an increase of about 13% without overclocking. During the demo, the GPU reached 100% utilization, but temperatures remained reasonable at around 55 degrees Celsius.

It’s a different story once DLSS 3 is on. As Wccftech points out in its report, the GPU was using a pre-release version of DLSS 3, so these results may still change. At the moment, DLSS 3 is looking more and more impressive every minute.

Enabling DLSS 3 also enables the DLSS Frame Generation setting, and for this test, the Quality preset was used. Once again, the GPU reached maximum usage and a boost clock of 2.8GHz, but the temperature was closer to 50°C instead of 55°C. The fps gain was nothing short of phenomenal, at 119 fps and an average latency of 53 ms. This means that frame rates have been doubled while latency has been reduced by 30%.

We also have the power consumption figures for both the DLSS 3 on and off, and this is where it gets even more impressive. Without DLSS 3, the GPU was consuming 461 watts of power on average, and the performance per watt (Frames/Joule) rating was 0.135 points. Enabling DLSS 3 reduced the wattage to just 348 watts, which means a 25% reduction, while performance per watt was boosted to 0.513 – nearly four times that of testing without DLSS 3.

Wccftech also tested this on an RTX 3090 Ti and found similar results, albeit worse. The GPU is still seeing increased performance (64%) and decreased power draw (10%), so the power consumption figures aren’t impressive, confirming that DLSS 3 will provide a real upgrade over its predecessor.

The reason for this unexpected difference in power consumption may lie in the way the GPU is used with DLSS 3 enabled. The load placed on the FP32 cores is transmitted to the GPU tensioner cores. This helps to release part of the load on the entire GPU and, as a result, reduces power consumption.

There’s no news that the RTX 4090 is a power-hungry single card, so it’s good to see that DLSS 3 might be able to lower those numbers a notch or two. Now, all we need is a game that can take full advantage of this kind of performance. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 is scheduled to launch on October 12 and will be priced at $1,599. With less than a month to go until its release, we should start seeing more comparisons and benchmarks soon.
