Better Call Saul star, Rhea Seehorn, will join the cast of Breaking Bad, Vince Gilligan, to present a new show on Apple TV+. Seehorn and Gilligan previously collaborated on the series Breaking Bad Better Call Saul prequel, which Gilligan co-created with Peter Gould. After the success of Gilligan’s Breaking Bad, which ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013, audiences were elated to learn that Gilligan would be returning to this universe with a series centered around fan favorite Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). Seehorn’s character Kim Wexler, who eventually married the dark attorney, became a standout character on the series thanks to her spirited storyline and adorable performance.
Better Call Saul enjoyed a six-season tour, which finally came to an end earlier this fall with a perfect ending that gave the character and the Breaking Bad universe a satisfying homage. Due to the acclaim from the ending, fans have been wondering about Gilligan’s next move, with some hopes that another Breaking Bad will appear. Although Gilligan has made it clear that she doesn’t plan to revisit the world of Breaking Bad anytime soon, fans will be happy to know that her time in the television industry isn’t over yet and that her next project will feature a familiar face.
Deadline reports that Gilligan and Sehorn have collaborated on a new series, which has been described as a “mixed and rooted drama.” Gilligan describes the project as “a break from writing against heroes,” noting that Sehorn’s character will be steadily more heroic than his previous main characters. Find out what Gilligan has to say about the project below:
“After 15 years, I thought it was time to take a break from writing against the champs…and who is more heroic than the great Rhea Seehorn? It has been a long time since I put on her show and I feel lucky to have been able to work with her. What a beautiful consistency To find Zack Van Amburgh, Jimmy Ehrlicht, and Chris Parnell! Jimmy and Zack were the first two people to say yes to Breaking Bad all those years ago. They built an amazing team at Apple and my great longtime partners at Sony Pictures Television, and it’s a pleasure to work with them.”
Gilligan’s new drama has already received a two-season order from Apple TV+, an encouraging tribute to the series in development. Mentioning the mixed and ingrained nature of the series makes sense given Gilligan’s previous projects, which have been praised for their fluidity and realism. While Gilligan doesn’t reveal much about the nature of the project itself, mentioning it as a “genre drama” might suggest that Gilligan will make another foray into the underworld. However, given his desire to break the mold and walk away from his earlier work with a more heroic character, the series will likely move into a new genre for Gilligan. Judging by Gilligan’s comments, Seehorn is the perfect choice for her leadership, as she made Saul’s moral compass, Kim, impossible not to encourage, even when she was immersed in her own styles.
Seehorn’s willingness to collaborate with Gilligan once again indicates the positive environment she creates in her projects. Several of Gilligan’s previous heroes have expressed their desire to work with the producer again, with Jonathan Banks, Giancarlo Esposito, and Odenkirk returning to Better Call Saul alongside several Season 6 stars from other Breaking Bad actors. After so long in the same universe, it’s exciting for Gilligan to take a new step in his career, and even more exciting for Sehorn to go along with him. Hopefully, more information about the series will be posted soon, though Gilligan is famously reserved for his shows.
