Lou (2022) Netflix movie review and ending explainedA work is a literary genre that needs no introduction. However, aging movement (or baby boomer craze) is a subgenre that requires little elaboration. Unless the name isn’t clear enough, movies (or shows) that fall into this category usually feature an older person who’s retired from whatever they used to when they were more mobile. But due to some unexpected circumstances, they have to reignite their skills and teach the youngsters that they are still the boss.
Western and samurai films are famous for embodying this very metaphor. However, since this style of storytelling has entered relatively recent settings, it should be recognized as its beast. Hence the name aging work. Some of the best examples are: Taken (2008), Red (2010), The Dark Knight Returns duology, The Expendables (2010), John Wick (2014)The Last Stand (2013), The Equalizer (2014), Logan (2017), The Foreigner (2017), Rambo: Last Blood (2019), Samaritan (2022). The only films that have stood up to the testosterone fest are Halloween (2018), Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), and today’s discussion topic, Lou (2022).

Anna Forster has the right ingredients for powerful anti-aging action, but she’s using the wrong formula
Directed by Anna Forster and written by Maggie Cohn and Jack Stanley, Lou follows the titular character, played by Allison Janney, who lives in a remote shack with her dog Jax (Ozzie and Jersey). Her neighbor is a single mother named Hanna (Jurney Smollett), who lives with her daughter (Ridley Asha Bateman), and has a boyfriend named Chris (Grayston Holt). Hana is barely finished but she promises to pay the rent on time Lo.
Meanwhile, Lu spends an entire day arranging for her final death which she will bring upon herself with the help of her shotgun. But she is forced to put this plan back as Hannah breaks into her home claiming that her estranged husband, Philip (Logan Marshall Green), has kidnapped Vee while on the run. With the phone lines down and Phillip blowing up Lou’s car, Lou decides to track him down and rescue Vee from his clutches.
Without spoiling too much, Foerster, Cohn, and Stanley attempt to address themes of intergenerational trauma and the lasting impact of war and revenge on Law. And they do a decent enough job of identifying the stakes and creating a sense of mystery about the shared dynamic between Lou, Hannah and Philip. But then I ran into two big problems. The first problem is that Philip’s endgame remains unclear until the last minute. When he reveals what he wants and why he wants to do it, it comes as a head scratcher because you realize his detailed plan hinges on Lou and Hana not dying in the blast above.
The second problem is that Foerster, Cohn, and Stanley spend a lot of time on the show and recreate something we already know about the characters, thus eliminating the urgency of the story. The fact that Philip is a demon is very clear. We don’t need to see him crush a butterfly or hear why he’s such a beast.
As for Lou’s technical aspects, her premise is tailored to a slew of exciting, tense, and exhausting sequences. The film takes place in an enclosed space with water facing one of the worst storms ever. There is a small town with a nice-spoken sheriff who is in charge. An ex-spy tracks a former Green Beret through the woods. But somehow, Foerster drops the ball by making the film look like sludge in shades of green and gray. Cinematographer Michael McDonough fails to beautifully render the mixture of rain, mud, and forest. These scenes are made worse by the sound design and the arrogant score. And when you get some relief from it all and hope to see some decent fight scenes, all you get are poorly composed and sporadically modified. . Allison Janney, Journey Smollett, and Logan Marshall-Green are undoubtedly a group of talented actors. But writing prevents them from absorbing anything because they are forced to constantly talk about how they feel. Janney’s Lou’s cold cut is incredibly effective and gives us a hint of the kind of nihilism she suffers from. Janie conveys that emotional burden through her body language, the tiredness in her voice, and her aversion to over-expressing what she really feels. However, since Foerster does not reduce the width, all these nuances are for nothing. The same can be said about Logan.
The constant shifting of his eyes keeps you on your toes because you don’t know what he’s going to do next. And then he starts explaining what exactly his master plan is, thus preventing you from dropping in on it. Smollett does a lot, and her chemistry with Janney is obvious, but even her personality starts to feel one note after a while. Ridley Asha Bateman holds her own against these representative juggernauts.

What does Philip want from Lou and Hana? Is Lou alive after her fight with Philip?
From the start, Phillip seems to have kidnapped Vee to mess with Hannah. Since he is guilty of war crimes, he will never get custody of his child. So, the reasoning behind his actions makes sense (only from his point of view). But the fact that Hannah has invested so much in helping Hannah and out there suggests that there is more to it than meets the eye. Halfway through the film, the relationship between Philip, Vee, Hannah, and Lou becomes clear when Lou sends Hannah to call Sheriff Rankin (Matt Craven) as she heads toward the place where Philip is holding Vee hostage. When Hannah Low (having upset Rankin about what’s going on) and finally finds out about Lou and Philip’s affair, she explains that during her time in Iran, she got very close to a very dangerous man, which means Philip was a hit. from that relationship. Even if she admitted that she gave birth to him to keep her cover. As a result of Lou’s ultimate neglect, Phillip becomes a monster and tortures Hana until she escapes, and he is now very intent on killing Vee. Shocked and disgusted by this revelation, Hana Low leaves her behind and chases after Philip alone.
Incidentally, while all of this is happening, Rankin gets a disturbing call from the CIA to confirm if Lou and Philip are on Orcas Island because they are in fact a wanted fugitive. When Rankin comes to warn Lou about this turn of events, Lou steals his quad bike and heads toward the lighthouse where Phillip is holed up. But Hannah gets there before her. She persuades Philip to leave Vee. comply. Once Vee was out of the picture, Hannah and Philip took her out. But Vee does this strange thing where she goes to the basement of the lighthouse instead of going to the exit door. Yes, it led to the discovery that Philip had blown up the lighthouse. However, it appears to be a strange way to let Lou tamper with the bomb controls – thus preventing Phillip from causing an explosion while they’re all there – and later use it to signal the CIA to their location. So why would one hide when one could escape?
After signaling the CIA to approach the lighthouse, Lou tells Hana to go away with Vee because he has to deal with Phillip. Lou then proceeds to engage Philip in a fight and, after exchanging more than two blows, embraces him while looking at the approaching helicopter with a sniper in it. Once you apologize to him for everything, the sniper takes the shot. By looking, they both fall and drift away into the ocean. Later, Hana was visited by the CIA because she had recently inherited Lou’s house. They tell her to tell them if she learns anything about Lou.
After they leave, Rankin basically tells the audience that Hannah and Vee are moving to Seattle with the help of Lou’s money. The scene turns into the ferry that Hana and Vy Jax are working on. As Hana and Vive look at the open water, Jax turns around and gives a puzzled expression after seeing someone. This person is a woman with her hand injured and looking at Hana and Fei from afar. The injury is similar to Lu’s, indicating that she is still alive and looking after her daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
