A new stained-glass window shows that Lehi will never forget her fallen officer

LEHI, Utah – A new stained glass window in the public safety building in Lehi city commemorates the legacy of the police department and the only officer killed in the line of duty.

Since beginning his service with the Lehi Police Department, Officer Joseph Adams’ parents say he has never sworn an oath of protection and light duty.

His mother, Rosemary Adams, said he had “always wanted to be a police officer since he was a little boy”.

“It was very meaningful to him,” said Tad, Adams’ father. “That’s what he wanted to do. That was what he had at heart. He was someone who could serve and participate in the community.”

The department’s current chief of police, Darren Poole, grew up with Joseph Adams at Pleasant Grove and was already serving in the investigative unit of the Lehi Police Force when Adams joined as a patrol officer.

“He was so eager to learn and be a part of[the police department]that he used to come with us on investigations,” Paul said.

But Adams’ service would only last a few years. He was shot and killed during a traffic stop for a suspected drunk driver in 2001.

Over the past 21 years, the police department has moved its name from one building to another. A memorial in his honor erected outside the Public Safety Building to Joseph D.

Earlier this year, Lehi City helped fund a piece of art with a new cultural arts tax.

Roots of Humanity and Holdman Studios have created a stained-glass window that shows the story of the police force from its early days to the present. It includes the current president and some former presidents. Adams front and center.

The organizations donated the work to the city of Lehi and revealed it during an event inside the Public Safety Building on Thursday.

“You want to capture who this guy is. He’s a hero in the community. He’s an icon,” said Dallen Orr, the lead artist on the project who worked on Adams’ face.

“So, having that expression where it is also weak and strong, that was what held the heroic symbol for me.”

“Unspeakable,” Paul said. “It’s so much appreciated and an honor to work with him.”

Rosemary Adams told KSL Television that she was “speechless with finesse”.

“Details. I don’t have the words to express how much we appreciate it.”

The window will remain inside the Joseph Adams Public Safety Building. A constant reminder of their son’s service and the police force that continues his work.

“It has become and will be an integral part of society forever,” Thad Adams said.
